Michigan rescinds offer to Harbaugh over sign-stealing

Jack is still enrolled there, but it would be difficult to transfer so close to the start of the academic year. Also he was a walk-on, so he likely wasn’t going to have his tuition covered by an athletic scholarship anyway.

But it IS an interesting question.

Since Fitz was fired, his kids probably also lost the reciprocal rights that B1G schools extend to each other for free employee family tuition.

Fortunately for his kids, Fitz can probably afford to pay for them to go anywhere they are accepted.

Federal tax ( and State)is after Webbs fee. ( ie net settlement) I also doubt Webb (actually Winston and Strawn) is handling the case on a contingency , but I honestly don’t know. I know a lawyer working on the case and he has simply said, please don’t e mail me

Harry

Also if Fitz does get a settlement from NU any portion that is agreed to be for “pain and suffering” is federally tax free

Harry

I will defer to the lawyers on this one, but I thought there had to be physical injuries for ‘pain and suffering’ damages to be tax-free.

The mental anguish that comes from being fired (and that anguish is real, as anyone who has been fired would agree), might not qualify as a physical injury.

Harry,

Thanks for the details.

Curious what your guess is regarding lawyer fees for a case like this if it isn’t a contingency.

What I was trying to figure out is whether or not Fitz would walk away with enough money to generate an annual income somewhere close to the $5.65M/year he was getting from NU. Working the math backwards, that would mean net dollars to him after taxes and fees of $93M (figuring and annual ROI of 6%).

Do you think Fitz will be able to walk away with a net near that number?

Jeff

ESPN is saying Harbaugh disputes report that contract extension offer was rescinded.

The Bears have had two coaches leave this year over some unspecified workplace related complaints, and it isn’t clear that their head coach will be back next season.

The Raiders owner just fired their GM, head coach and OC.

Why would Harbaugh or Fitz want to work in the NFL??

They do get fired in college too

Because at least in the NFL it’s crystal clear it’s a business.

And you don’t have to run around the country recruiting.

No, but NFL coaches do run around the country scouting for the draft.

The Big Ten has informed Michigan that they may be subject to penalties for the cheating allegations.

Michigan’s AD is a member of the playoffs committee, but he is staying home to deal with formulating a response to the Big Ten’s notice, due on Wednesday.

The Michigan saga gets weirder every day. Now Michigan RB Blake Corum has shown up in Wyoming corporate records as being the co-owner of an LLC with former staffer (and surreptitious scout) Connor Stalions and a third person, Connor O’Dea.

Corum denies that he has any business dealings with Stalions.

Michigan has responded to the Big Ten’s notice on possible sanctions, so now the ball is back in Tony Petitti’s court. He could announce sanctions as early as tomorrow.

Several Michigan legislators have written to the Big Ten stating that due process needs to be followed. Michigan has also said they will fight any sanctions in court.

Michigan has also engaged in ‘whataboutism’ by claiming that other Big Ten schools shared information about Michigan’s signals.

Is this fight necessary at this time? IMHO, if Michigan does make into the playoffs, they’ll probably suffer another embarrassing semi-final loss.
