This would mean an end to the conference championship games (no great loss, IMO), start the season another week earlier, and won’t do the bowls that aren’t part of the playoffs a lot of good.
I hope the final setup has 4 spots guaranteed for each of the B1G and SEC. I fear we could have a 9-3 year where we get pushed out for a bigger name team.
This year in Maureen’s dream scenario we beat Oregon and lose to tOSU and finish 10-2 and we make the playoffs as a 8 seed and host a game. I have the fear that even it that unlikely scenario happens we will be the “first ones out” and excluded from the playoff field entirely.
It looks like there will be 5 guaranteed slots (4 power conferences and the Group of Six) and 19 at-large spots, but basically this means that any team in the top 15 will be in the playoffs and the haggling will be over the last 4 or 5 slots.
But without conference championship games, how the conferences write their tie-break rules will become more important. And Dr. Pepper will have to figure out what playoff games will get their scholarship football-tossing contests.
Randy Walker’s Dream was to win a National Championship at NU. With the new playoff setup it is actually possible…
Interesting that if we do get int the mix it will be with a DC who is an Alum, but the student of another Alum. Who probably won’t be surprised by NU’s play tomorrow.

I’m hoping a 24 team format produces a lot of competitive games, but I’m somewhat afraid that the first round will be like the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament, where the lower seeded teams win once every few years.
Players sitting out their bowl games to get ready for the NFL draft has become a big issue lately, but will we start to see players sitting out a playoff game for the same reason if they think their team is just cannon fodder for the top of the field? Or will they want addition ‘NIL’ money?
