Franklin lands on his feet again, this time at Virginia Tech

I wish Virginia Tech good luck dealing with him.

What do you think of the James Franklin hire at Virginia Tech.

I personally doubt Virginia Tech has the money or the reputation to become an elite team, though they should be able to return to being competitive in the ACC. But will they make the playoffs? Not counting on it for a few years, and fans might get tired of Franklin’s whining by then.

He has more flexibility at VaTech than he had at Vandy. PSU probably had more restrictions on recruiting than VaTech does.
Now both schools have much more money than VaTech. I think if he was doing well in DMV recruiting he could land on his feet quickly. The ACC is beating itself up this year with teams entering the top 25 then immediately losing, which bodes well for consistency. With no dominate team and an unbalanced schedule he definitely has a path to potential ACC title games.
I dislike Franklin so I don’t wish him success, but other than landing at a deep south school this is a good spot for both sides.

Besides, I’m sure VA Tech has a few Alums with Deep Pockets yearning for a big winner.

But then there’s Virginia, who has had flashes of good, but never seems to win the big game.

As a long time Blacksburg resident I can fill in a few details about Virginia Tech. They are massively increasing their spending on college sports to the tune of a $229 million increase in the next 4 years!. It’s not just coming from deep pocketed donors, but also a big increase in institutional spending and increased mandatory student fees. The backdrop is that they are afraid of the ACC suffering from the next round of media contracts and want to put themselves in a good position to find another landing spot. They felt that they needed a high profile coach to make this investment work

Somebody has to be funding the NIL fund… VA Tech did have a few good years, a long time ago. I’m sure I’m not the only “old timer” who remembers when they were playing well.

Wonder how much of the $229 million FRanklin got?

Our game in Champaign is a night game on Fox which is shocking. I was sure we’d get a BTN spot, but I guess there are a ton of stinkers.

Two of the Big Ten games are on Friday and Ohio State-Michigan is the 11AM Fox game. USC-UCLA and Oregon-Washington are still TBA on time.
