Kyle Whittingham retires at Utah

DC Morgan Scalley was named the coach-in-waiting a year ago and is expected to take over.

Whittingham is now expected to be the new coach at Michigan. He’s 66, so this looks a bit like a stopgap move to me.

A question from Detroit for the group - who among you has been to all or nearly all of the NU Bowl games from 1/1/96 on?

We did Rose-Citrus-Alamo-Motor City-Sun-Alamo-Outback-Ticket City Dallas-Meineke Houston-Gator-Outback
Missed Pinstripe
Did Music City-Holiday
Missed Citrus-Las Vegas-Motor City
13 out of the 1995 on 17 appearances. They are undefeated the bowls we have missed.

Today I was with Michelle Priefer, who’s made it to all but 2 & Jason Singer, who’s only missed 3. This was my 8th - .500 record for Cats in those games (attended Gator/Pinstripe/Music City/Game Above wins & Rose/Citrus/2 Outback losses).

And if this question had been posed in, say, 1993, how many of us would have imagined even one bowl appearance, let alone 17???

Yeah, but we still need to beat USC.

Is Whittingham a placeholder similar to Bill O’Brien at Penn State after the Sandusky affair? Why else would he come out of retirement with no midwestern connection into a discombobulated athletic department?

Since some number of us remember …

Our leading rusher in 1981 had 162 yards.

For the entire season

I guess we’ll see how long he stays at Michigan, he’s 66, Kirk Ferentz is 70 and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down yet.

Bill Belichick is 73. Frank Solich coached at Ohio until he was 76, Bowden until he was 80, Paterno was 85 when he was fired.

Was my senior year & I envisioned many Bowl games ahead … not.

Have attended two wins this year, that’s double as many as NU had in my four undergrad years. Fun.

I remember Michelle! We worked together at Baxter (um, about 20 years ago…).

His pay is reportedly around $8 million a year for a five year contract. Not bad for a coach his age (late 60s).
