UNLV QB Matthew Sluka has left the team over what appears to be an unfulfilled verbal NIL promise of $100K in NIL money, but it sounds like the story is a bit more complicated than that.
And UNLV has gone from being the favorite to win the MWC to an underdog in this week’s game. So it goes.
Lets see, he doesn’t get picked up by another team, and files the million dollar lawsuit against UNLV,
OR
will one of the UNLV Alums decides to make a $100 K donation to the NIL fund to get him back.
I didn’t know that the NIL money was supposed to be paid up front. I guess the kids expect a big payday to just show up for the first practice, but I’ll be this won’t be the first time this happens.

It probably should follow the NFL model where there is guaranteed money like the signing bonus and game payments.
We are in the last years of the weird world of college football before it changes again with direct athlete payments from the university.
And do those “direct payments” change the kids’ scholarships?
(wish I graduated HS with a full ride and spending money)

What’s happening now makes the SMU death penalty offenses look like small potatoes. But I think Reggie Bush suing over not getting NIL money when he was in school, years before NIL existed, is still wrong. (I also have mixed emotions over giving him his Heisman back. He broke the rules, as they were at the time. He was just dumb enough to get caught at it.)
To quote Rex Butler (Glark Gable) at the end of Gone With the Wind…
Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.
He still has the trophy, right? all you can do is put an asterisk on his name when you list the Heisman winners, but the argument can go on whether he really was the best player in College Football that year.
